Precor EFX 5.37 Premium Series Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer Review

Precor EFX 5.37 Premium Series Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer

(More customer reviews)
Let me start by saying that I've wanted a good home elliptical machine for years. I'm a software engineer, and sitting at a computer all day is not the best exercise. I'm not a professional trainer or a marathon runner so I don't have that type of perspective on this machine. However, I have been using it consistently since I put it together, so while I'm not a fitness expert, I've used it enough to give it a good, full review.

This is one seriously expensive piece of machinery, no doubt about it. At this price point, I would expect to receive an elliptical trainer that is absolutely flawless. There are way too many other options out there to seriously entertain the prospect of putting down this much cash on a machine that is anything less than perfect. Seriously, if I sold both my car and my motorcycle tomorrow, I'd be shocked if I got enough for them to equal the cost of this elliptical.

But enough about me and my aging vehicles. The shipping for this item mirrored the shipment of my Precor 9.35 Premium Series Treadmill almost exactly. The delivery guy dropped it off at my front door and waited while I opened the box and moved it, piece by piece, into my house so that he could get his pallet back. You have the option of having them put the box in your garage instead, but as I stated in that review, that option wouldn't have worked for me.

Moving the elliptical machine inside took several minutes and several trips. It contains a number of large and unwieldy parts, the biggest and heaviest of which was the pre-assembled ramp/pedal/motor section. Luckily, this part has wheels on the motor end, which is by far the heaviest end. It was actually relatively simple to lift the light end and roll it around to wherever I wanted it. However, if you are small in stature and/or unable to lift heavy objects I would definitely recommend having help. That goes for both moving the parts around and for the actual installation.

In addition to the machine itself, the crate included a coupon for a free professional installation by a Precor expert, a nice looking rubber mat to protect your floor, and two Precor-stamped water bottles. If you decide not to follow the recommendation of professional installation, an assembly guide is included so you can put it together by yourself. Mine also included an addendum to the assembly guide, which added to the instructions and negated a couple of steps due to changes made in how the parts were shipped. Of course I didn't see this until after I had completed the build, which led to a little confusion during assembly. Luckily, it all worked out correctly and I didn't have to redo anything.

=== ASSEMBLY ===

Taking my time to make sure everything was done right the first time, the full assembly took me a couple of hours, but an extra pair of hands would likely have made that go faster.

Your best bet is to lay the mat down exactly where you want the elliptical to go, with the tapered end facing forward, and rolling the large main assembly into position on the mat with the motor cover end facing the rear. This way you'll be able to put the machine together without having to move it when you're done. When choosing a place to put it, note the location of any ceiling fans. While it doesn't matter to my 5'5" girlfriend, I'm 6 feet tall and at times can get uncomfortably close to ceiling fan blades while on the elliptical. I solved the problem by moving it closer to the edge of the room.

The assembly of the machine itself was relatively straightforward thanks to a clear and detailed manual. You'll need a pair of scissors (the manual says wire cutters, but anything that will cut those plastic zip ties will work), a crescent wrench (I couldn't find mine, so I used open wrenches instead. A 1/2" and a 3/8" wrench will do the job), and a socket wrench with a 1/2" socket and an extension. You will also need three different sizes of allen wrench, but these are provided in the box.

Once you have that stuff in hand, it's just a matter of "screw this to this, with this" a couple dozen times. It's really not quite as bad as it looks when you're staring at all of the components strewn about the floor.

=== BUILD QUALITY ===

One thing you'll notice about the 5.37 from the moment you open the box is that its component parts are all heavy and solid, built to last. This is great news, considering the fact that all of those moving parts are going to take a lot of punishment, especially at the moving joints. The front and rear covers, the display, and the pedals are a heavy duty plastic, the crossramp is aluminum, and the rest is an incredibly strong powder coated steel. The connecting rods in particular feel like they came straight off of a tank. The handles on the moving grips and the heart rate grips are a mix of metal and a high quality rubber material. It's practically seamless, so there seems to be no way that the rubber will ever start to pull loose over time.

The wheels on the ramp are sort of like a super heavy duty version of roller blade wheels. They are perfectly positioned from the factory, so you won't have to worry about them running against the rails and getting damaged over time. They also provide near-silent operation. As a whole this machine is whisper-quiet, but the wheels seem to emit no sound whatsoever. The action is smooth too. With no power to the motor, you can push on one of the pedals and there is so little friction that it will complete one or two revolutions before coming to a stop.

=== FEATURES ===

Many of the features are already listed in the product description, but here are few additions/enhancements:

First of all, I have never seen the convertible grip feature on an elliptical before, and it's really quite cool. You can convert the swinging arms into stationary arms. It only takes a few seconds to do and it really changes your workout. You can feel your lower body working harder, and your midsection seems to get a better workout due to the extra balance required if you're not hanging onto the grips.

The adjustable stride is a nice feature, although it's more of a "set it once" kind of thing for me. Maybe as I improve I'll try changing it to see if it will help me concentrate on different muscles. The pedals themselves are only 3 inches apart -- this is great for maintaining a comfortable walking style. Some ellipticals have the pedals too far apart and it doesn't feel as natural.

The display panel is very similar to that of the Precor 9.35 Premium Series Treadmill. If you look at the photo that shows the display, you'll see the calorie burn counter at the top left and the heart rate display at top right. Below those is an orange/green/orange strip that shows your heart rate graphically against different "zones" (warmup, fat burning, cardio, and peak). Directly below that is the graph display that shows you where you are within your current program, and the current crossramp incline setting. Then there's a single-line scrolling display that can show you the program completion percentage, alert you to an upcoming change in resistance, as well as display a number of different metrics including max heart rate, average heart rate, vertical distance traveled, program completion percentage, calories burned per minute/hour, and several more. Along the bottom, you'll see four more displays: Elapsed Time/Time Remaining (with a toggle button), Crossramp incline, Resistance, and Distance/Pace/Strides Per Minute (with a toggle button).

You can save the information for up to four separate users. You enter a name, age, and weight, and the 5.37 will save all of the user's cumulative data (total distance, strides, calories burned, etc) since they created the profile. It also remembers your favorite programs and best times, and uses your information to determine your target heart rate.

In addition to the heart rate monitoring hand grips, the 5.37 comes with a wireless chest strap that will communicate data to the elliptical.Personally, I prefer the chest strap because it gives you constant data, while the grips only give you heart rate data while you are holding them. My girlfriend is the opposite, mainly because she doesn't like the fact that the chest strap gets sweaty.

Above the display there's a place for a water bottle, wide enough even to accommodate one of those large sports drink bottles. There's also a shelf for a phone/mp3 player, etc. and a lower compartment for magazines and whatnot. On the display face is a strip that can be used to hold a magazine or book in front of you in the open position.

=== USAGE ===

There are a number of different programs to choose from. They're separated by type, such as "Weight Loss", "Heart Rate", "Variety", "Performance", etc. so you can just hit the button for the type you want and then scroll through the different options.For those times when you have a specific goal that you'd like to achieve, there is a goal mode. This allows you to select your goal and the computer will determine how you can achieve that goal. For example (and I'm not using real numbers here, it's just an example) let's say you want to set a calorie goal -- you want to burn 500 calories. You can enter your goal of 500 calories, and the computer will set a crossramp incline of 6, a resistance of 5.0, and a Time Remaining of 1.5 hours. Don't have that kind of time? Just make an adjustment at any time to your incline or resistance and the time to complete will be reduced accordingly. Whichever goal you choose (calories, time, distance, etc.), the way in...Read more›

Precor EFX 5.31 Premium Series Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer Review

Precor EFX 5.31 Premium Series Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this about the middle of December 2009, so I've had it over three months now. I use this thing an hour a day, at least five days a week (can't run anymore because my knees won't take it).So this isn't a first impression kind of review.

While there are many things to recommend Precor for, this model has some problems that you should be aware of if you're thinking about buying one.

Pros:
-- overall excellent quality materials and build
-- machine motion is top notch, very smooth, no rough or jerky places within the range of travel -- which is important if you're actually going to spend even half an hour at stretch on it
-- excellent customer service and technical support from Precor, they left me with the definite impression that they care about their customers (and for the price they should)

Cons:
-- this unit has a couple of significant design flaws, see belowAmazon shipped the machine to my house with no problem, no complaints there.It came on a semi-tractor trailer, so be aware because they'll have to be able to get in front of your house with a truck that big.It's tail gate delivery.I had a couple of carts that the truck driver helped me set it on, and I rolled it into my garage.It's heavy, so one person it's going to pick it up and carry it around.

I'm a product design engineer, so I know something about what goes into the design and fabrication of this kind of product.I was also a technician for five years before I went to college, so I'm pretty handy.But I'm also busy, so I called Precor to get someone to assemble it.They gave me the name of their local rep, who I called -- and they called me back once, promised to show up in a week, but didn't.They also refused to answer my calls after that.

I called Precor twice more, who tried to contact the field rep.Nothing, no response from them.Precor apologized, but by now a month had gone by so I said I'd assemble it myself.They gave me their tech support number, which I did end up calling just to make sure I was doing everything right.

Note:getting a hold of people at Precor was easy, and I felt like they really went out of their way to help me.Their customer service and tech support get 5+ stars.I subtracted zero stars for the field rep not showing up.Hey, things like this can happen sometimes when you've got subcontractors.

Assembly was straight forward, no problem if you can use a wrench and a screw driver.There was one gummed up thread in one of the welded on nut plates, but I ran a tap through it and it was fine.At the end of assembly I was impressed, they really did use high quality materials and the component build quality is impressive.One gummed up thread is no big deal to me, it's very easy to happen and easy enough to fix
.

So then I started using it.I've used Precor ellipticals in gyms for years and always been impressed with them.For the money I spent I was *really* expecting something pretty close to the same kind of controls and kinematics.Why else would anybody spend the money on a Precor elliptical?But this unit is quite different from what you find in gyms, in two ways:

1) The control panel.Unlike the commercial grade machines, you cannot get on this thing, set the resistance where you want, and just go.Instead you HAVE to push a sequence of buttons when you first get on.It reminds me of certain well known computer operating systems, which insist on getting in your way as you work.Because they know better than you do, how you should live your life.

They've got all the buttons already built into the control panel.It would have been a piece of cake to make it work just like a commercial machine, where default is "step onto machine, set resistance where you want, and just go for as long as you want".If somebody wants to use the programs they can just push one of those buttons and start the program.

Instead, if you just want to set the resistance and go for 45 to 60 minutes -- without the stinking thing stopping in the middle of your workout -- you've got to push about half a dozen buttons.I spent time with their tech support making sure it's not just me, not knowing how the thing works.This IS how the EFX 5.31 works.

Dumb, unnecessarily complicated user control panel:minus one star.Once you know the button sequences you can live with it.Which is good because by the time you've bought it, you'll have to.But for this much money it really shouldn't be like this.2) There was still room for a good rating until I learned about the kinematics of this elliptical.I've used probably every Precor model that's been in gyms (like Ballys) for the last ten years.There's never been one that I couldn't get on, and just stand up straight on while using it, without need to lean on the handle bars (and I go pretty fast, usually 45 to 60 minute work outs).The foot pedals and overall motion are such that it's comfortable to stand upright on their commercial machines.Note:I always use ellipticals with the ramp all the way at the bottom, lowest angle.

Precor has set up the kinematics of this machine quite different.I absolutely cannot stand up straight while using this machine, as it comes out of the box.It forces me to lean over on the hand rails.Which I may not mind when I'm 90 years old.I found this quite annoying.The kinematics of the EFX 5.31 are quite different from their commercial machines.

I'm six feet tall, and my wife is five feet tall.She can stand up straight while using this machine just fine.I've since had friends in to try it, and it seems that people on the shorter side can use it fine.But taller people generally have the same problem with it that I do, and find that they have to lean forward and grab onto the handle bars.So, being an engineer (and having spent lots of money on it), I started looking into why.We went and tried a couple of commercial Precors in gyms and sure enough, my wife and I both can use them standing up with no problems.I did some measuring and I'd estimate that the foot pedals on my machine at home (the EFX 5.31) need to be (about) 3 inches further back than they are, and also the foot pedal angle on the 5.31 is different.Whether the foot pedal angles would be right if located 3 inches back I'm not sure.

But I found from playing with my home machine, that if I let my feet hang off the back of the pedals about 3 inches (meaning, I'm standing on top of the backs of the pedals), then I can stand up on it without leaning over, and use it just like the commercial Precors.At this, the backs of my feet almost touch the rear housing on the unit.But "almost" I can live with.

Which means that to use my home unit comfortably, I needed to build some wedges to go inside the foot pedals.I got some modeling clay, laid plastic sheet inside the pedals, and made a pattern with the clay (note, right and left foot pedals are identical).Then got some plaster of paris and made a mold from the clay patterns.Then got some epoxy from a hobby store and cast that in the mold, and made myself a couple of custom foot pedal inserts.

At this, I can now use my EFX 5.31 just like the commercial models they put in the gyms.It's now a very smooth, very stable, very nice machine to work out on.But it took some effort to get there.

Messed up kinematics on the EFX 5.31 elliptical machine:minus 2 stars.I still cannot believe they did this........????Hello, Precor?What did you think it was, that makes people willing to spend the money you charge for elliptical machines?

I'm a product design engineer so maybe I'm being harsh here.But I cannot forgive this basic design flaw in the EFX 5.31.Were they trying to save pennies by making this thing just a little shorter?I know what extruded aluminum costs -- they really didn't save enough pennies to make it worth screwing up the excellent kinematics of their commercial machines.This machine looks like it's kinematics and mechanics are about the same as their commercial models, but it's not (yet they charge big money for it anyway).Don't buy any elliptical machine that you haven't used for about half an hour continuously, to make sure it's going to be comfortable for you.I looked at many before I bought this one, and there's lots of machines out there with horrible kinematics.Fortunately I was able to fix this one so I can use it.

Precor EFX 5.25 Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer Review

Precor EFX 5.25 Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a person for whom hip replacement surgery is inevitable, this elliptical trainer is a huge blessing. Precor's EFX 5.25 Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer is a sophisticated and attractive example of next generation home fitness equipment. It's so well built that it may be the last piece of fitness equipment we will ever need. Its attractive design is appealing and I find that I don't mind looking at it as it dominates the space I've dedicated to exercising.

The delivery of this machine involved a freight carrier. Those with non-traditional driveways like mine (low hanging branches and a gravel drive, making it impossible for the semi or a pallet jack to navigate) will need to plan in advance. As the freight company called a day before delivery, I was able to make sure that a pick-up truck was available. This allowed the driver to easily transfer the box from the back of the semi into the back of the pickup. After positioning the cargo closer to the house with the pickup, it was a simple matter of opening the box and carrying the equipment into the house piece by piece. It would be best if you had 2 strong and able people to carry the body of the Crosstrainer as it does not come with wheels and must be carried in one piece. (The freight weight of this equipment was over 240 pounds.)

After reading the enclosed instructions, my husband felt that assembling the machine wouldn't be a major challenge. It took him, and our 15 year old daughter, about 2 hours to put it together. While a single (strong) person could likely do the job, having a second available to hold things in place while they are bolted together makes the job much easier and faster. Precor furnishes the tools required for assembly (see the uploaded photo under "customer images") but we found that you also really need a socket wrench with an extension. It should be noted that one should not plug this equipment into a power strip or extension cord.The manual specifically requires a "properly grounded outlet" otherwise the user runs the risk of voiding the warranty.This machine draws 120V and should be properly installed most importantly for the sake of safety.

(Incidentally, before deciding to assemble the machine ourselves, I did contact Precor as well as their designated installer for our area to schedule an appointment. The representatives of both companies were extremely helpful and professional and I had no reservations about using their assistance had it been necessary.)

The 5.25 is one of the smaller in-home Crosstrainers that Precor engineers. It's extremely well equipped with moving handlebars, heart rate sensors, adjustable ramp (15 - 25 degrees) and adjustable tension/resistance. With a stride of 18.5 to 20 inches, the Precor 5.25 is best suited for those of us of smaller stature. At 5'5", it fits me very comfortably while my husband who is 6'3" does not get a "full" stride experience on this model. (Incidentally, the Precor 5.33 has a stride of 21 to 23 inches while the Precor 5.37's stride ranges from 21 to 24.5 inches, perhaps making these models better suited for those who have longer legs.)

Without regurgitating every bell and whistle already described by the manufacturer on the product page, let me note a few of the features that I find to be of benefit. There are 2 programmable user profiles that allow you to track your progress and record your settings. The ramp is self-adjusting and does so very smoothly and naturally so that it enhances your workout experience rather than interrupting it. There are several different programs to choose from so that you can benefit from a variety of challenging (low impact) elliptical workouts without endangering "problem" areas such as weak or disfigured hips, knees etc... You can also hop on and do a "quick start" and manually input your desired settings.

The actual performance of the machine is a dream.All movement is so well balanced and fluid the machine actually feels like an extension of your body.Nothing jerks or stutters, and there are no unpleasant noises coming from the depths of who-knows-where to punctuate your workout.I will note, however, that when my husband uses the machine (he's a big, well-formed guy, 225 lbs+) the wheels do squeak just a little in the track.The manual indicates that this is normal and to be expected but it doesn't happen when I'm working out.According to the manual, the "equipment has been durability tested to 250 lbs".

Without doubt, this is one of the most flexible and technologically advanced pieces of fitness equipment I've ever encountered. While my own experience is limited to the industrial equipment at my local gym, cheap models offered in the "free" gym at hotels and those shown on the floor at "big box" department stores, I am never-the-less extremely impressed by the quality, versatility and "smart" design of Precor's 5.25 Crosstrainer.

Precor EFX 5.23 Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer Review

Precor EFX 5.23 Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this elliptical 3 years ago for $4500, so I was amazed to learn today that it is only $2999 on Amazon. I have worked out on several machines and if your life is crazy like mine and you need maximum burn in the least amount of time, then this is it. My average calorie burn is 400 in 30 minutes at resistance level 11 and incline level 14, whereas on my Precor Treadmill, I only achieve half of that for about 210 calories. Gives excellent lower body and core muscle tone, and leaves your hands free to read an article, switch channels on the TV remote, drink a power shake, etc. The calories burned on the Precor 5.23 rival my weightlifting workouts that burn 1,000 calories per hour, and that's intense!!
