Suunto Lumi Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, Sunrise/Sunset Timer, and Weather Indicator (Sportif Black) Review

This is a great watch - fantastic functionality, easy to read, easy to operate. It came with a hideous orangeish red band that looks like something Bozo the clown would wear, so I quickly ordered the black band and changed it. Much better! My only complaint is that the watch is huge and heavy, but the plus side is that the info on the watch is easy to read.

Product Description:
Navigate both mountain trails and city streets with ease with the Suunto Lumi Sportif wrist-top computer watch. Designed for women, the Suunto Lumi Sportif features a built-in altimeter, barometer, compass, and weather indicator, all in a clean, fresh housing. In other words, the watch is tough enough to endure a day of hard play, yet versatile enough to make a sport-inspired statement for a night out. And with a choice of different straps, pendants, or carabiner jackets, you can create a look to fit any activity.
The Lumi Sportif's primary selling point is its built-in altimeter, which displays your current altitude, vertical gain or loss from the start of a hike or climb, and your vertical ascent and descent rate. Accurate to within 30,000 feet, the altimeter is an extremely valuable tool for mountaineering, backcountry skiing, and wilderness travel. The altimeter contributes to your excursion in several ways. If you're standing on or near an obvious geographic feature, such as a ridge, trail, or creek, the altimeter can alert you to your current elevation and help you find your position on a topographic map. Similarly, if you plan on climbing a slope to a certain elevation and then traversing, the Lumi Sportif can help you stay on course. And as a bonus, the watch includes a unique start-from-zero function, so you don't have to enter a reference altitude. Instead, with the single push of a button, the altimeter will begin tracking your ascent and descent.
The Lumi Sportif also includes a barometer, which measures and records air pressure to help you predict changing conditions--from sunny skies to hair-bending electrical storms. The barometer helps you decide whether to bring a soft shell or rain shell jacket when the skies look ominous, or even when to high-tail it back to the car. In general, low pressure brings inclement weather, while high pressure brings stability and clear skies. If you've arrived at camp and notice the pressure starting to plunge, it's probably a good idea to secure the tent and crawl in. Likewise, if you were on a climb, it would be prudent to find shelter and retreat. Even at home, the Lumi Sportif barometer can look beyond office walls, skyscrapers, and nearby hills to help you plan for upcoming activities.
If you want a weather forecast that extends out a few hours, you can turn to the built-in weather trend indicator. The indicator shows the barometric history for the last three and six hours, helping you predict the weather with amazing accuracy. What's more, the watch doesn't give you a regional forecast posted earlier in the day, but rather the most current information about the weather directly overhead. In addition, the Lumi Sportif can sense an approaching squall even when the sky looks clear. This intelligent Storm Alarm--one of several intelligent features designed to keep you safe and secure--is activated by a rapid drop in air pressure over a three-hour period. Once the Lumi Sportif senses the change, the Storm Alarm sounds and flashes, letting you know that something unpleasant is fast approaching. And no outdoor watch is worth its salt without a digital compass, a great tool for keeping track of your direction while skiing, hiking, or exploring a new city. You can set and follow a bearing with a traditional rotating bezel, or simply point the top of the watch toward your intended destination and lock it in.
Additional features include several traditional watch functions, including dual times, a date display, and an alarm with a five-minute snooze; predicted times for sunrise and sunset to help you maximize your daylight hours; a day counter that keeps you abreast of an upcoming event; an automatic Alti/Baro mode that senses movement or lack thereof and switches between the altimeter and barometer accordingly; and the ability to function in English, German, French, and Spanish.
The Suunto Lumi Sportif comes equipped with a pendant and carabiner jacket, and is compatible with a number of other fashion-forward straps, pendants, and carabiners, depending on your taste. The Lumi Sportif carries a two-year warranty.

About Suunto
Suunto was founded in 1936 by outdoors man and a keen orienteering enthusiast, Tuomas Vohlonen, who had long been bothered by a problem: the inaccuracy of traditional dry compasses and their lack of steady needle operation. Being an engineer with an inventive turn of mind, he discovered and patented the production method for a much steadier needle, better readings, and a new level of accuracy.
By 1950 the company was exporting compasses to over 50 countries around the world, including Canada and the United States. In 1952, Helsinki was hosting the Olympic Games, and the torches carried to light the Olympic flame were Suunto products. The next step was improving the stability and accuracy of marine compasses. The first marine compass, the Suunto K-12, was launched onto the market in 1953. In 1957, Suunto started manufacturing hypsometers, which measure the height of trees.
In the 1960s, the compass range grew further and Suunto introduced its first diving compass--initiated by the divers themselves. A British sports diver attached a Suunto compass to his wrist and found that the device also worked underwater. Thanks to his feedback and initiatives, the new business category was found. Suunto's exports and business grew steadily and Suunto then focused on combining its strength in precision mechanics with new skills in electronics. Accuracy, reliability, and ruggedness have been Suunto's key values from the very beginning of the company history.
Today, Suunto is a leading designer and manufacturer of sports instruments for training, diving, mountaineering, hiking, skiing, sailing, and golf. True to its roots, Suunto is today the world's biggest compass manufacturer. Prized for their design, accuracy and dependability, Suunto sports instruments combine the aesthetics and functionality of watches with sport-specific computers that help athletes at all levels analyze and improve performance. Headquartered in Vantaa, Finland, Suunto employs more than 500 people worldwide and distributes its products to nearly 60 countries. The company is a subsidiary of Helsinki-based Amer Sports Corporation with the sister brands Wilson, Salomon, Atomic, Precor, and Mavic.

National Geographic Men's NG752GKBS TimeTrekker III Digital Compass Watch Review

National Geographic Men's NG752GKBS TimeTrekker III Digital Compass Watch

it looks nice & it had a compass & that was all that I was looking for, yet I suppose I over-looked the obvious.....I WANTED IT TO WORK!!! I purchased this watch and was relatively pleased for about two months before it started to poop out on me, after replacing the battery at my own cost, I finally contacted customer service. After a long ordeal, I was able to get someone to send a replacement thanks to watch. When I received it, it was shortened by a few links. So after getting it up and running again....it once again crapped out on me. Then when I contact customer service, they tell me that the COMPANY HAS FOLDED AND THEY NO LONGER HONOR THE WARRANTY....(read, I'm SOL)
its nice to be appreciated, DON'T BUY THIS DAMN THING

National Geographic Men's NG702GKSY Hike Master Altimeter Lap Counter Watch Review

National Geographic Men's NG702GKSY Hike Master Altimeter Lap Counter Watch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm reviewing the National Geographic Ski Master Watch, NG702GKSY.This is not the hiking watch, it is the Ski model with the yellow band. The NG702GKSK is the same watch with a black band.

Ergonomically, yes, this is a big watch, and it has a stainless steel case, so it is heavy. The weight is definitely noticeable at first, but I rapidly became accustomed to it.Because the wrist band flows smoothly into the shape of the case, this helps to reduce the visual sense of the size.On the down side, the watch won't take aftermarket bands.

The watch packs a lot of functionality. In addition to the usual watch functions, two time zones, timer, chronometer, alarm, the watch has pressure (barometer/altimeter), compass, and temperature sensors.

In this model, the altimeter function feeds into a "ski log" database. In ski mode, the watch senses the beginning and end of a descent, and keeps records for each as a "lap".

If you manually enter the slope of the run, the watch calculates maximum and average descent speeds for each lap.Unfortunately, where I ski, this slope information is not readily available.

The watch provides the following data for each lap:
Start time, descent time, max speed, average speed, highest altitude, lowest altitude, altitude change, and a graph of descent altitude vs time.

It also can provide a summary of your laps:
Date, start time, total travel period, number of laps, total descent time, accumulated descent altitude change, accumulated ascent, max speed, highest altitude, lowest altitude, slope.

While these are interesting bits of data to the most avid skier, there are other models of National Geographic watches that have the same basic styling, but are designed for hikers, such as the NG701GKSU (black) and NG701GKSR (dark gray), that may be more appropriate for the "average" watch buyer. As an added bonus, those watches have bands that match the case color.

Comparison to the Casio Pathfinder
Relative to the Casio Pathfinder watch, which also has triple sensors, the National Geographic watches seem more sturdily built, and, to my eye, they offer a more pleasing look thanks to the band that flows into the lines of the case. The display uses light letteringon a dark background. This is not as visible as the more typical dark lettering on a light background found on the Casio. The backlight of the Ski Master is anemic. It allows the watch to be used in near or total darkness, but offers very little help in normal lighting conditions.

Summary:
4 out of 5 stars.Great functionality, good style (if you like a yellow wrist band, otherwise go for the GKSK version), and well built. But the somewhat difficult to read display and almost worthless backlight prevent me from giving it 5 stars.
