(More customer reviews)I have no cartilage left in my knees.There are studies that show that repetitive motions like cycling at 70-90 RPM rebuilds the cartilage matrix.So I needed a bike.I don't go to the gym, and figured a membership to the gym around the corner would cost about $100 a month.I figured my budget based on a year of gym memberships - $1200.I wanted to spend less - but that was my price range.
I started at SEARS and found a perfectly acceptable bike there for around $500 and then looked it up online, the Nautilus Recumbent R514 and that looked pretty great.And it was almost 1/3 of what I had to spend.I also looked at the Schwinn 240 which was a bit less expensive and had a cool video game console!That kind of grabbed my attention.LOL
But I wanted a bike that would be professional commercial gym quality, that was silent and that would last for 30 years.And for that, you do have to crank up the pricing.So I dug into the StarTrac and LifeSpan R3.At first I was pretty sure I was going to get the R3.It had tons of great reviews and looked professional and heavy duty.But then I found a very new offering - the compact LifeCORE 850rb.I ordered, it came in a couple of days.Our delivery guys brought the box right into the room where I wanted it, too.It's very heavy.
My husband installed it when I was at work.He said it wasn't too bad but I wasn't here for that.Personally, I am pretty sure I would have had to hire someone to do the assembly because I am pretty lame at doing things like that - so you might want to keep that in mind.You will have to call over your friend the engineer if you get into trouble installing.I think it took my husband about 2 hours - and that was with two little kids running around, grabbing parts, tools, hanging off his neck...
The bike is absolutely SILENT.I can zone out in front of the TV - and it is PERFECT.It is SILENT!That was really important to me.And I'm 6 foot - it accommodates my height and looks like there are a couple of inches to go if you are a few inches taller than that.My five year old is four feet tall and on the lowest seat setting she can use the bike, too.It has a very nice range of seat adjustments and is extremely comfortable.Soon after installation I saw my six year old with his legs crossed on-top of the console - just reclining on the bike like it was a chaise lounge!
The first few minutes I used it I could feel the sweat and felt like I was working!Which was shocking to me, as a long time warrior I never put much faith in exercise bikes for a workout.But believe it!If you are looking for a cardio machine, this one has you covered.
The range of motion is perfect.And the operation is smooth.I have kept it to only 1 or 2 bars for resistance - my reason for using this bike may be different than yours (cartilage building) and I love it.
The company is from San Diego area - you can google them.It is really important to me to support an American made product.
Finally - the bike is SUPER compact and SOOOOOO much better looking than the R3 that I almost ordered.It has two little wheels on the front stabilizers so you can lift the back and wheel it around.It has a tiny thin cord that plugs right into the wall - you don't need a super power source - just regular house electricity will do.
I LOVE IT.I would buy it again if I had to buy one for my mom or dad or for my kids.It is expensive, well made and works perfectly.I am certain my cartilage will rebuild in no time!!;-)
